The
Beall-Ross Home was built in 1884 by R. A. Beall. Two of the brothers who
founded Beall's Department Store were born in this dog trot structure. This
particular architectural style, with the open hall through the center of the house,
was made popular from 1850-1900. The hall made the house cooler in the summer.
The Ross family bought the house and surrounding farm land in 1903. Three
generations of James Manning Ross's descendants lived in the farm house at Church
Hill, in the rural East Texas countryside. The home was donated to the Museum
in 1989.
